Overview
Create a course template from Courses, not from Services. Use this for puppy school, scentwork, obedience, or any multi-lesson group class.
The template creates the lesson service. Do not add a Regular or Lesson service by hand for the group class. Staff enrol from Courses, not from the Appointments New Appointment form.
Time to complete: 5-10 minutes
Before You Start
What You'll Need
Requirement | Why It's Needed |
At least one team member | Someone to assign as the course instructor |
At least one resource | A location where the course will be held |
Don't have these set up yet?
Create team members: Team Members → "+ New"
Create resources: Resources → "+ New"
Step 1: Create the Course Template
Do not go to Services → Add New → New Service. Everything starts from the Courses page.
Go to Courses
Click "New"
Select "New Course Template"
Follow the prompts to configure your template
Template Configuration
The template creation wizard will guide you through setting up:
Field | Example | Notes |
Name | "Puppy School - 6 Weeks" | Include duration in the name for clarity |
Duration | 60 minutes | Length of each lesson |
Price | $300 | Total course price (not per lesson) |
Number of Lessons | 6 | How many sessions in the course |
Recurrence | Weekly | How often lessons repeat |
Capacity | 6-8 | This is your class size! |
Refining Your Template

The template editor tabs are Basic Info, Pricing & Payments, Duration & Timing, Course Structure, Lesson Details, Team Members, Booking Settings, Fields & Forms, Notifications, Automatic Actions, Policies & Paperwork, and Who Can Book.

Course templates are archived, never hard deleted.
Open the template
Select Archive Template
To bring it back later, select Unarchive Template
Step 2: Set Up Capacity for Group Classes
⚠️ This is where most new users get stuck.
For group classes, you need to ensure your resource (training room/facility) can handle your group size.
Course Template Capacity
When creating your template, set the capacity to your desired class size (e.g., 6-8 pets).
Resource Capacity
Your resource also needs sufficient capacity. Go to Resources → select your training resource → Edit
Setting | Value | What It Means |
Capacity | 6+ | The resource can handle 6+ pets at once |
🚨 Important: If your resource capacity is 1, you'll get a "capacity problem" error when trying to enrol multiple pets.
Capacity Rules
Template Capacity | Resource Capacity | Result |
6 | 6+ | ✅ Can enrol up to 6 pets |
6 | 1 | ❌ Capacity error: resource limits it |
1 | 6 | ⚠️ Template limits it to 1 pet |
The lower of the two values wins. Both need to be set correctly.
Step 3: Publish Your First Course
Now that your template is ready, publish an actual course instance.
Navigate to Courses
Go to Courses → "New" → "Publish New Course"
Complete the Publishing Form
Step 1: Course Setup
Field | What to Select |
Course Template | Your newly created course (e.g., "Puppy School - 6 Weeks") |
Team Member | The instructor for this instance |
Location | Where this course will be held |
Step 2: Scheduling
Field | What to Set |
Start Date | When the first lesson begins |
Start Time | What time lessons start |
Petboost automatically generates all lesson dates based on your template's recurrence pattern.
Step 3: Review & Publish
Review the generated schedule, then click "Publish Course".
Step 4: Enrol Pets
Once your course is published, you can start enrolling pets.
Go to Courses → "New" → "Enrol pet(s)"
Step | Action |
1. Select Owner | Search for the pet owner by name, email, or phone |
2. Select Pet(s) | Choose which pets to enrol |
3. Choose Course | Pick from available courses with space |
4. Confirm | Complete the enrolment |

Troubleshooting
"I can't find the Courses menu"
Courses appears in the main left sidebar, below Services. If you can't see it:
Check that the Courses feature is enabled in Settings → Features
Contact support if it's still not visible
"Capacity problem" error
This means your resource capacity is too low. Go to Resources → select your resource → increase the capacity to match your desired class size.
"Course template not appearing when publishing"
Make sure your template:
Was created via Courses → New → New Course Template
Is not archived
Has all required fields completed
"Pet can't be enrolled"
Check that:
The pet meets any age/breed requirements on the service
The course still has available capacity
The course hasn't already started
