Overview
A membership plan is the product you sell to your customers. It defines the price, billing cycle, and benefits that members receive. You can create as many plans as you need to serve different customer segments.
Before you start: Make sure your services are set up in Petboost first. Benefits reference your existing services and service categories, so those need to exist before you can attach them to a plan.
Choose how your plan handles multiple pets
Before you build anything, decide which of these three shapes fits the plan. Most businesses need only the first.
Shape | What it is | Use it when |
One price for all their pets | One price covers every pet on the owner's account | The default. Simplest to sell and simplest for pet owners to understand |
Extra pets cost more | One set of inclusions, extra pets add to the bill | Benefits are unlimited, uncapped discounts, or household-level (for example one home visit per week regardless of dog count) |
Only for households with 2+ pets | Separate plans per number of pets (a 1-dog plan and a 2-dog plan), each with its own inclusions | Each dog should get its own inclusions, for example 2 walks a week each. On each 2+ plan set Minimum pets, so only households with that many pets can join. Build the ladder with a group of plans or Make the 2-dog version |
The quick test: if both dogs come in on the same day, do you charge for the second one? If yes, the surcharge fits. If no, the inclusions need to scale with pets, so build a household tier.
Navigating to Memberships
Click Memberships in the left-hand navigation menu (this opens the member list)
Switch to Plans using the Plans / Members toggle
You'll see your membership plans, ready to view or create
Creating a plan
Step 1: Start a plan
Click the Create plan button in the top-right corner, then choose A single plan (or A group of plans for a tier ladder)
The plan creation form opens
Step 2: Plan Details
Fill in the basic information:
Plan Name - A clear, customer-facing name (e.g., "Groom Club", "Daycare Pass", "Premium Membership")
Description - A short description explaining what the plan includes and who it's for. This is visible to your team and can be shown to customers.
Plan Category (optional) - Groups similar plans on the memberships list. Select a category, or select New to create one. See Create a membership category.
Price - The amount charged per billing cycle (in your local currency)
Billing Cycle - How often the customer is charged:
Weekly (every 7 days)
Fortnightly (every 14 days)
Monthly (every 28 days)
When do they pay and refresh? - Choose one:
On their start date (default) - Each member bills and refreshes from the start date they pick. If they pay now and start later, the week follows the start date, not the day they paid.
Fixed day of week - New members start on that weekday, or start today. The first payment is the full week unless you turn on Pro-rate the first week, in which case they pay only for the days until that weekday. Renewals and capped benefit counters share that same day.
Fixed benefit week, billed from their start date - Capped benefit counters run over the same shared week for every member (for example Monday to Sunday), while billing runs from each member's own start date. Members can join any day without waiting. Every capped benefit on the plan must refresh weekly.
Member limit - Off is Unlimited. Turn it on and set how many members the plan takes. Once that number is reached, the plan shows a full badge and new members cannot join from the booking page or from Add member manually. Existing members stay. If you set the cap below the people already on the plan, those members stay; nobody new can join until some leave.
Tip: Choose a plan name that's easy for customers to understand. "Groom Club - Monthly" is clearer than "Plan A" or "Tier 1". Changing the refresh day later only affects new members - existing members keep their current billing and refresh day.
Choosing between the pay and refresh models
Pick On their start date unless you plan your week around one shared refresh day.
On their start date suits businesses whose members join year-round and visit on their own schedule. Nobody waits to start, and each member runs on their own week.
Fixed day of week puts billing and refreshes on one weekday for everyone. Someone joining mid-week can start today and pay the full week, start today and pay only for the days until that weekday if Pro-rate the first week is on, or wait for the weekday and pay nothing before then.
Fixed benefit week, billed from their start date keeps the shared week for counting included uses while each member pays from their own start date, so nobody waits to join. A mid-week joiner's first part-week grants the full allowance for the days remaining, and because billing runs from their own start date their first payment covers a full cycle rather than a part-week. This model needs every capped benefit on the plan to refresh weekly.
On the first two models, pay day and refresh day travel together. The third model splits them: each member has a pay day of their own and shares the refresh day with everyone else. The member detail and benefit calendar show both days separately.
Step 3: Add Benefits
Once you've set the plan details, add one or more benefits. Each benefit defines a specific entitlement for members.
Click Add Benefit to configure each one.
Step 4: Pets & Households
Answer one question: a member has two dogs, what should happen? See Choose how your plan handles multiple pets for which shape fits.
One price for all their pets (the default)
Extra pets cost more - set Each extra pet adds. The step shows what two dogs pay and what they share, from the price and benefits you just set. To also require a minimum, turn on Only for households with 2+ pets
Only for households with 2+ pets - set Minimum pets (the number in the option's name follows it)
Step 5: Cancellation & Pausing
Set Minimum commitment and Pausing. See Managing Subscribers.
Step 6: Terms & Conditions
Select Create draft plan. The plan is saved as a draft and the builder moves on to Terms & Conditions, with terms written for you from the plan. Nothing is published yet. Read the terms, select Edit if you want to change them, tick I have reviewed these terms, then select Next.
If you go back and change the plan after the terms were written, they are rewritten when you return to this step. If you edited them by hand, your edits are kept and the step offers Regenerate.
Step 7: Review & Publish
Check the previews and the summary, then select Create & publish. If Allow self-service purchase is off on Cancellation & Pausing, the button reads Create & keep hidden and only your team can enrol members. Save as draft keeps the plan unpublished; publish it later from its page with Publish plan.
Configuring Benefits
Each benefit has several settings that control what the member receives and how usage is tracked.
Benefit Type
Choose the type of benefit:
Included Services - A fixed number of specific services included per week or month (e.g., "2 full grooms per month")
Percentage Discount - A percentage off the standard price for specific services (e.g., "20% off all nail trims")
Unlimited - Unlimited access to specific services in each period (e.g., "Unlimited daycare visits per month")
Service Targeting
Define which services the benefit applies to:
Specific Services - Select individual services from your service list (e.g., "Full Groom - Medium Dog")
Service Categories - Select entire categories so the benefit applies to all services within them (e.g., "All Grooming Services")
Tip: Using service categories is more flexible. If you add a new service to a category later, existing membership benefits automatically cover it without needing to edit the plan.
Usage Limits
For "Included Services" benefits, set how many are included per period:
Quantity - The number of services included (e.g., 2 grooms, 5 daycare days, 1 bath and brush)
Allowance length - How long this quantity lasts before it refreshes (weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or per billing cycle). This is the length, not the weekday. The weekday comes from the plan: each member's start date, the fixed day of week, or the fixed benefit week's day if you set one.
For "Percentage Discount" benefits:
Discount Percentage - The percentage off standard pricing (e.g., 15%, 20%, 50%)
Usage Limit (optional) - Cap the number of discounted bookings per period, or leave unlimited
For "Unlimited" benefits:
No quantity limit is needed - the member can book as many times as they like within the period
Overage Behaviour
For capped "Included Services" benefits, choose what happens when a member exceeds their allowance:
Full price (default) - Extra bookings are allowed at the standard service price. Turn "Offer a discount on extra bookings" off to keep this.
Discounted overage - Extra bookings still get a member deal. Set the discount as a percentage or a fixed dollar amount. A fixed amount is never worth more than the service itself, so it can at most make the booking free.
There is no separate "Block" mode. If you need members to wait for the next period, leave overage off (full price) and train staff not to book extras under the membership, or set a tighter cap.
Important: Benefit edits on a published plan apply to live members. A newly added capped benefit gets counters issued now. Changing an existing cap takes effect at the next refresh (current remaining stays until then). Price, surcharge, and billing cycle edits do not change what existing members pay. Each member's membership is an agreement: they keep the amount and cycle they joined on. People who join after you save pay the new catalogue price. To put an existing member on the new price, cancel that membership, then Reactivate.
Example Plan Configuration
Here's how a typical grooming membership might look:
Plan: Groom Club
Price: $89/month
Billing Cycle: Monthly
Benefit 1: Monthly Groom
Type: Included Services
Services: Full Groom (all sizes)
Quantity: 1 per month
Overage: Discounted (15% off additional grooms)
Benefit 2: Nail Trim Discount
Type: Percentage Discount
Services: Nail Trim category
Discount: 50% off
Limit: Unlimited uses
Benefit 3: Add-On Discount
Type: Percentage Discount
Services: Add-Ons category
Discount: 10% off
Limit: Unlimited uses
Publishing a Plan
Once you've configured your plan and added all benefits:
Review the plan summary showing name, price, cycle, and all benefits
Click Create & publish, or Create & keep hidden when Allow self-service purchase is off
Once published, customers can see and join the plan on your booking page if self-service purchase is enabled, and your team can enrol members at any time with Add member manually
Note: Published plans can still be edited. Benefit edits apply to live members as described above. Price, surcharge, and billing cycle edits apply to people who join after you save. Existing members keep the price on their agreement.
Editing an Existing Plan
To modify a published plan:
Navigate to Memberships then the Plans tab
Click on the plan you want to edit
Make your changes to the plan details or benefits
Save your changes
What you can edit
Plan name and description (updates immediately for everyone)
Benefits (apply to live members; a new capped benefit is issued now, an existing cap change waits for the next refresh)
Overage behaviour (applies to live members)
Price, additional pet surcharge, and billing cycle (catalogue only: people who join after you save pay the new amount. Existing members keep the amount and cycle on their agreement)
Weekly, fortnightly, and monthly on one card are separate plans. Editing the weekly price does not change the fortnightly or monthly plan.
You do not need Clone this plan just to charge new members more. Edit the price on the same plan and click Publish Changes. Clone only if you want both the old and new prices available to choose from at the same time. Cloning does not move anyone. Each member stays on their current agreement until you cancel that membership and Reactivate (same plan) or use Add member manually (different plan).
To put an existing member on a new price or a different plan, see Move a member onto a different price or plan.
Regenerating terms
After you change benefits, price, policies, or When do they pay and refresh?, open Terms & Conditions and select Regenerate. Regenerating reads what is on the plan and rewrites the terms body from it, so the document a member agrees to matches what you are selling.
If you change the pay and refresh weekday on a plan that already has members, save first. The plan then shows Regenerate terms after saving.

Hide or archive a plan
If you want pet owners to stop joining a plan themselves, open the plan and click Hide from pet owners. Existing members keep billing and benefits. Your team can still enrol people with Add member manually.
You cannot archive a plan while anyone is still on it (Active, Past Due, Paused, or a start that is already due). Cancel those memberships first, then use Delete or archive plan.
Archiving hides the plan from the default Plans list (turn on Include archived plans to see it). It does not cancel members, because you cannot archive until those memberships have already ended.
To restore an archived plan:
Open Memberships and switch to Plans
Turn on Include archived plans
Open the plan
Select Restore plan
Best Practices
Naming
Use clear, memorable names ("Groom Club" not "Plan 1")
Include the service type in the name for clarity
Keep names short enough to display well on mobile
Pricing
Research what competitors charge for similar programmes
Price to deliver genuine value while maintaining healthy margins
Match the billing cycle to how often customers visit (weekly, fortnightly, or monthly)
Benefits
Start simple with 1-2 benefits per plan
Make the value obvious - customers should immediately see the saving
Use discounted overage (rather than full-price extras) when you want to encourage additional visits
Include at least one benefit that drives regular repeat visits
Structure
Start with one plan and expand based on demand
If offering multiple tiers, make the differences clear and meaningful
Avoid more than 3-4 tiers - too many options causes decision paralysis
Pricing for multi-pet households
See Choose how your plan handles multiple pets first if you have not decided which of the three shapes fits.
The additional pet surcharge is billing only. Adding a pet does not add more included uses. All pets on the membership share the same allowance.
The plan builder asks which shape you want on the Pets & Households step, after you have set the benefits. On a plan you have already saved, the same choice is on the Details tab under Pets & Households. Three options:
One price for all their pets (the default): every pet on the owner's account is covered, including pets added later. Nothing to choose at checkout.
Extra pets cost more: members tick which pets are covered when they join, and each pet after the first adds the amount in Each extra pet adds. The covered pets are fixed for the life of the membership.
Only for households with 2+ pets: one price sized for a bigger household, restricted by Minimum pets. This is the 2+ pet plan of a household ladder.
What the surcharge does and does not do
The surcharge raises the price when a member covers more than one pet. It does not give each pet its own inclusions.
Good fit | Poor fit |
Unlimited benefits (e.g. unlimited daycare) | Capped inclusions each dog should get separately |
Percentage or fixed discounts with no cap | "1 day care day / week" meant as one day per dog |
Household-level inclusions (e.g. 1 home visit regardless of dog count) | Any plan where both dogs using it the same day should both be included |
Recovering capacity cost for multi-dog households |
Litmus question: if both dogs come in on the same day, do you charge for the second one? If the answer is no, inclusions need to scale with pets, so build a bigger tier instead of using the surcharge.
The tier recipe (when each dog needs its own inclusions)
An owner can hold only one active membership per business, so create a plan tier sized for the household rather than a second subscription.
Example: base plan $60/week with 1 daycare day, and you would have charged a $45 surcharge for a second dog. Create a two-dog tier at about $105/week with inclusions doubled (2 daycare days/week). To build the whole ladder in one pass, choose A group of plans and set What do the plans vary by? to Number of pets: every plan you add after the one-dog plan copies it with the price and included amounts multiplied by its pet count, and its Minimum pets already set.
Restrict a tier to households of that size
Under Pets & Households (the builder step, or the saved plan's Details tab), choose Only for households with 2+ pets and set Minimum pets, at least 2. Only owner accounts with at least that many active pets can join. Owners with fewer pets see the plan with a 2+ pets badge and a disabled button, and staff cannot enrol that account until a pet is added. The check runs when the membership is created; archiving a pet later does not affect a live membership. Keep the pet count in the plan name as well so staff read it at a glance.
To build the two-dog copy in one step, open the one-dog plan and choose Make the 2-dog version, on the plan's page or under Pets & Households on its Details tab. It is offered on plans without Minimum pets set. It opens the plan builder prefilled as a "(2 Dogs)" copy with Minimum pets 2, one price covering every pet, the included quantities doubled and the price prefilled at the base plus the surcharge, or double the base when the plan has no surcharge. Discount the price to what you want to charge, save it as a draft, then publish.
