Managing Services

Updated today

Overview

Services are the foundation of your pet care business in Petboost. They define what you offer, how much you charge, how long appointments take, and who can book.

Petboost supports six distinct service types, each designed for specific use cases. Understanding when to use each type is key to building a professional, efficient service menu.

Stay Services: The Key Concept

Stay services (boarding, overnight daycare) use 24-hour period billing, not calendar nights.

Why 24-Hour Periods?

Calendar nights don't account for check-in/out times:

Booking

Calendar Nights

Actual Hours

Mon 9am → Wed 6pm

2 nights

57 hours

Mon 6pm → Wed 9am

2 nights

39 hours

Same "2 nights" but 18 hours difference! 24-hour period billing is fairer.

Two Tier Types Work Together

  1. Per-Day Period Rates — For full 24-hour periods with "stay longer, save more" discounts

  2. Short-Stay & Spillover Rates — For partial days under 24 hours

Tier Unlocking: "Stay Longer, Save More"

When a stay exceeds a tier's minimum duration, that rate applies to ALL full periods:

Example Tiers

Rate

1-2 days

$117/day

3-14 days

$73/day

14+ days

$63/day

5-day stay:

  • Unlocks "3-14 days" tier at $73/day

  • All 5 days charged at $73 = $365 total

  • Not $117 for days 1-2, then $73 for days 3-5

Regular Services: Quick Setup

For standard appointment services (grooming, walking, training):

  1. Set base price — What you typically charge

  2. Set duration — How long the service takes

  3. Assign team — Who can perform this service

  4. Enable booking — Allow customers to self-book (or staff-only)

Best Practice: Start Simple

Recommended approach for new businesses:

  1. Start with 5-10 core services

  2. Use clear naming: "Full Groom - Large" not "Service A"

  3. Add size variants if pricing/duration differs significantly

  4. Enable self-service booking for most services

  5. Use add-ons for optional extras

Avoid:

  • Creating too many services (overwhelming for customers)

  • Vague pricing ("varies" — use "from $X" instead)

  • Underestimating durations (causes scheduling conflicts)
